Megan Cleaveland, Soprano

Soprano Megan Cleaveland is gaining regional acclaim for her silvery tone and onstage versatility. Most recently she had the pleasure of working with Sherrill Milnes’ Voice Experience program as an apprentice artist in Florida, New York, and the Savannah Voice Festival. Recent performances include Elvira in L’italiana in Algeri, Micaëla in La Tragédie de Carmen, and Elena in Il cappello di paglia di Firenze. A recent graduate of the A.J. Fletcher Opera Institute at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA), Ms. Cleaveland’s roles included Olympia in Les Contes D’Hoffmann, Serpetta in La Finta Giardiniera, and The Foreign Woman in The Consul . Other recent professional engagements include Papagena in Die Zauberflöte and Mrs. Nordstrom in A Little Night Music.

A lover of concert work, Ms. Cleaveland performed the soprano solo in Carmina Burana with the UNCSA symphony and the role of La Vierge Marie in Berlioz’s rarely performed L’enfance du Christ with the North Carolina Master Chorale.

Previous seasons’ highlights include scenes from Lucia di Lammermoor during Opera Theatre of the Rockies’ Vocal Arts Festival and a performance of the title role in Janáček’s The Cunning Little Vixen, where she studied with soprano Renata Scotto in Mezzano, Italy.

During the 2017-2018 season Ms. Cleaveland will make her company debut with North Carolina Opera as Lila in Cold Mountain and perform the role of Madeleine in Piedmont Opera’s Silent Night.

Critical Acclaim

Elena / Il cappello di paglia di Firenze / A. J. Fletcher Opera Institute
"(Megan Cleaveland's) lovely pure soprano rung out over the orchestra clearly."
Soloist / Mozart Birthday Concert / University of North Carolina School for the Arts
"Tall and svelte, Ms. Cleaveland is gifted with a powerful coloratura voice with a lovely vibrato"
Serpetta / La finta giardiniera / A.J. Fletcher Opera Institute
"Soprano Megan Cleaveland brought considerable comic skills to the role of Serpetta, a role similar to the world-wise Despina in Così fan tutte but with an edge. She blended a strong and even voice with comic high jinks. Her aria "Chi vuol godere il mondo," advising taking the world as it is, as well as her later drunken aria, were hits with the audience."
